Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright:
Ace Attorney
Release date: August 28, 2014
Nothing is as it seems...
Here we go again, another whirlwind adventure with our favorite professor and his reliable assistant, but this time with a twist! After being attacked by witches, Professor Hershel Layton and Luke and transported to the scenic Labyrinthia, only to be joined by Phoenix Wright himself, and his assistant Maya too, of course. It’ll take everything they’ve got to solve the mystery of Labyrinthia and the elusive Storyteller, a man who transforms anything he writes into reality.
We’re all for the brilliant storytelling and boggling puzzles found in the Professor Layton series combined with the high action, courtroom drama that is Ace Attorney. The graphics have been improved somewhat, sporting a more HD look that we feel encompasses Phoenix’s rather eccentric expressions quite well. We’re also rather fond of the soundtrack for this game as some tracks from both the Professor Layton and Ace Attorney series have been reworked into grand orchestral pieces, a true delight for fans of the series. For a game that’ll have you scratching your head with a plethora of puzzles to solve and leave you at the edge of your seat as you work to solve the mystery of Labyrinthia while being spared the courtroom’s wrath, this one definitely takes the cake.

Forget what you think you know
If you’re here, there’s no doubt in our minds that you like to solve puzzles, but do you like 3D immersive puzzles coupled with delicate, but bizarre machinery, secret societies, and a long hidden, dark secret? That’s a question easily solved by diving into the world created by The Room. After playing it ourselves, we’d be hard pressed to say that we’ve ever seen anything like it. The graphics in this game are beyond stunning and almost hyper realistic, with intuitive controls that allow you to manipulate the most delicate of objects with ease. As for the sound, we highly recommend playing with headphones. Absolutely nothing filled us with more uncertainty and dread than the creaks of the hardwood floor, the clicking and whirring of machinery, and the whispers of the unseen lingering in the air.
In the latest release of the game, The Room 4: Old Sins, we’re transported to a manor to investigate the Null and what became of the couple that lived there. This time, we’re pulled into the many rooms of an intricate dollhouse, solving the many contraptions located both within and on the exterior of the house while learning of the horrors that occurred within the manor in the form of notes left behind by the couple that once lived there. Just when you think you know what’s going on, you discover another piece of the puzzle that takes you back to square one. This installment left us with just as much dread as its predecessors and, some good news, players who absolutely loathe jump scares will have no problem playing this game…though we’re not sure the lack of jump scares makes this game any less spooky! Still, we highly recommend it to anyone who loves puzzle games with a hint of horror and mystery.
